Performance Review

What a performance review is, what strong review systems include, and how teams can make reviews more useful than a once-a-year paperwork exercise.

A performance review is a structured evaluation of an employee’s work over a defined period. Reviews usually combine written feedback, manager judgment, employee reflection, and sometimes ratings or multi-source input to assess performance and discuss next steps.

At their best, performance reviews help employees understand impact, expectations, and growth opportunities. At their worst, they become a rushed exercise in memory, form-filling, and vague judgment.

Why performance reviews matter in performance management

Performance reviews still matter because they create a dedicated moment to step back from day-to-day work and talk about broader patterns. They help teams connect short-term execution to long-term growth, clarify expectations, and document important decisions.

They also tend to sit at the center of the wider performance system. Self-reviews, peer feedback, performance ratings, and calibration often flow into or out of the review process.

That central role is exactly why review quality matters so much. If the process is thin, delayed, or inconsistent, the rest of the system inherits those problems.

What good performance reviews look like

Good reviews are grounded in evidence from the full review period, not just the most recent weeks. They include enough specificity that an employee can understand what drove the assessment and what to do next.

The strongest review systems also spread the work over time. Instead of asking everyone to reconstruct a year of context at once, they collect signals along the way through 1:1 meetings, feedback workflows, and ongoing documentation.

Reviews also become more useful when they clearly separate assessment from development. Employees need to understand both how they performed and how they should grow, but those are not exactly the same conversation.

How Windmill supports performance reviews

Windmill’s performance reviews feature is built to reduce the scramble that usually defines review season. Windy gathers context during the year from connected tools, team feedback, and prior conversations so managers are not starting from a blank page when cycles open.

That makes it easier to prepare self, peer, manager, and calibration inputs from the same base of evidence. If you want a broader overview of where AI fits here, Windmill’s page on AI performance review software explains the workflow in more detail.
